A revised 1.6 engine replaces the Cooper and Cooper S engines found in the MINI range this spring. There’ll be a little more power and torque, and hence performance, but the engines are designed to be more efficient, so they’ll use less fuel and pollute the environment a little less.

All petrol MINI models will meet the EU5 exhaust emissions standard in Europe and the ULEV II standard in the USA.

Cooper S stats?

The Cooper S (claimed to be the world’s most efficient 1.6-litre) will put out 182bhp compared to the current 173bhp but matches the previous 177lb ft of torque. Acceleration to 100kph is quicker with a time of 7 seconds compared 7.3 before (Clubman is 7.5 and Cabrio 7.3).

Top speed rises to 228kph (from 220kph) for the hatchback and 225 for the Clubman and Cabrio. Meanwhile fuel consumption has dropped to 5.8L/100 for the hatch and 6L/100 for Clubman and Cabrio. That compares with 6.9 and 7 respectively.

And the Cooper…

Likewise the power rises to 120bhp from 118bhp for the Cooper, with torque remaining the same. Acceleration is 9.1sec (versus 10.4 for the current car) for the hatch. Top speed rises to 203kph from 196 kph and economy improves to 5.4L/100 from 6.5.

What else?

An Overboost function pushes torque up to 192lb ft for short bursts. Plus as well as direct injection and twin-scroll turbo, the Cooper S engine also now gets fully variable valve control to optimise engine response according to your throttle pressure – so that’ll be valves fully open all the time then!

The Cooper also gets the variable valve thingy, but not the Overboost feature which Cooper S owners will love bragging about.

Prices?

Not available yet, but we’re not expecting a vast difference from the current pricelists.
