GM has announced that it is to sell off its Hummer brand to the Chinese truck manufacturer Tengzhong. The terms of the sale include keeping the existing factories in the US and worldwide dealers, plus future investment in fuel-efficient technologies.

Hummer products have fallen out of favour with buyers in the US in recent years, with sales down over 60% in the first three months of this year compared to 2008. However, the new owners hope to push the brand further in emerging markets - especially China.

Speaking of the sale, Yang Yi, CEO of Tengzhong said, 'The Hummer brand is synonymous with adventure, freedom and exhilaration, and we plan to continue that heritage by investing in the business, allowing Hummer to innovate and grow in exciting new ways under the leadership and continuity of its current management team.' Mr Yang continued, 'We will be investing in the Hummer brand and its research and development capabilities, which will allow Hummer to better meet demand for new products such as more fuel-efficient vehicles in the U.S.'
