Honda Civic Type-R MUGEN
23 June 2009
By Ben Pulman
Honda's Mugen Motorsports performance tuning arm has released the first official pictures of the company's stripped-out Civic Type-R hot hatch.
It looks pretty impressive - how has Mugen tweaked the Type R?
Details are still sketchy, but let's start with the visual changes. There's a deeper and wider front spoiler (sans fog lights), a new grille, a vented bonnet, plus vents just behind the front wheels.
At the back the Civic's triangular exhausts have been replaced by two huge bazooka tailpipes, which fit beneath a more angular rear bumper, and there's also a double-decker wing to make rear visibilty even worse. Various bits of the body addendum are thought to be made from carbonfibre.
What about inside and under that vented bonnet?
Inside you won't find any rear seats, but there will be a pair of hip-hugging Recaro buckets up front, along with bits of carbon trim. The 2.0-litre VTEC engine is expected to get a tweak to 240bhp, and there are also new wheels and brakes.
Prices for the Mugen tweaked Civic will be north of $50k when sales start at the end of 2009, but Honda expects demand to outstrip supply.
The bad news for us in the Middle East is that we don't even get the regular European Type-R hatch, or the Japanese Type-R saloon, so it's very unlikely you'll be seeing one of these in your local showroom. Surely worth a private import though?
And if you can't cough up the cash for a full-blown Type-R, then Mugen plans to offer different kits to match the wodge in your wallet. So you could opt for a new set of wheels and tyres while you save for the engine upgrade and decide how hardcore you want to go.
Let us know what you think of the new Mugen-tweaked Honda Civic Type-R below.

23 June 2009 Hope Honda ME brings it to this region! I dont understand why we have limited supply of this vehicle here. I remember the earlier version EP3 was sold like a hot cake here, it started at quite a fair price and even with price increase the vehicle was back ordered and customers had to wait. Right now there isnt any decent sports sedan available from any of the Japanese manufacturers apart from Mitsubishi Evolution 10, but not everyone would go for it. Having another option would be great and this would surely move lot more compared to any other Japanese manufactured sports sedan. Like the S2000 did! Reply |

25 June 2009 Is there a particular reason that why they do not bring this car to ME, and we have very limited cars among which we need to choose? Reply |
