Your SUV of the Year 2009 isn’t it?
Oh yes, the 2010 edition of the Range Rover Sport has had subtle but significant updates. You can read about the technology stuff here, but the big news is that the Sport is now all the car it always should have been, and more.
The trio of Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and LR4 are all a major step up from their immediate predecessors thanks to some clever engineering, even though they may not look it. But out of the three, it’s the Sport that has probably benefited the most in terms of fulfilling its destiny.
Really tell me more?
Well first let’s talk about the previous Sport. No bad car, not by a long margin, but it did fall a little short of the ‘Sport’ tag, especially when compared to rivals like the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne, which frankly could show it the way home on a challenging road.
Of course, by dint of the green oval badge, the RR Sport could always counter with supreme off-roading skills – despite its lower ride height when compared with the Range Rover. Let’s not forget that underneath there’s a lot shared with the, then LR3, now LR4.
But for the sort of customers buying prestige high-rollers to blast around town in, it was starting to get a little tired, especially from being slaughtered in the traffic light GPs by its German arch rivals.
Quick then?
Nearly a second and half quicker to 100kph than the previous version: 6.2 versus 7.6. In fact it’ll hit 100 from rest and then stop in less space than it takes the old car to get to 100!
But the difference is that it feels so much quicker. There’s now a relentless surge of torque as soon you jump on the throttle and Supercharged Sport keenly leaps off the line – so violently explosive is the acceleration that you need to treat the throttle with care around town. Even more impressive is the mid-range potency.
And that’s without slipping the tweaked transmission into Sport – which ensures meaner, sharper, more immediate kickdowns and longer gear-holding. There are even paddleshifts on this thing. Extraordinary.
