The Infiniti G37's biggest problem is the Nissan Altima Coupe.
Both are swoopy two- door derivatives of saloons, hailing essentially from the same manufacturer. Put them side by side and you notice the Infiniti has a less bulbous, more planted look about it, an ovoid grille and of course a $20k premium. Lift up their pretty skirts to note another fundamental difference – one pulls and the other, seductively, pushes.
Forget the Altima and instead think of two other siblings. If the Nissan 350Z comes to mind, you win a point, as mechanically they have much in common. The G37 is a more grown up and practical 350Z. In Japan it’s the Skyline coupe – which of course is what the GT-R used to be before it gate-crashed the world’s supercar party. So the G-sportster is a cut-down ’Ring Master then?
Not really. What it is, is a brutish, hairy chested, I’ve-only-just-packed-away-the-medallion, rowdy beast, with a veneer of sophistication and refinement demanded by its upmarket-Nissan status. And yet still utterly redolent of 1980s ricers.
Inside it employs premium touch surfaces, and generously sprinkled gadgety buttons mostly poured onto the central console. Tall drivers will have to keep reminding themselves what these all do as they constantly bang their heads against the low roof and suffer memory loss.
Fortunately the seats are a tight fit for when you’re pushing the Gs through the corners, and there’s good legroom with steering that adjusts for rake and reach taking the instrument panel with it. The rear is best left to kids, but the boot’s okay.

17 September 2008 Think of both cars de-appreciation in value in the GCC and you would certainly go for the G37 Reply |

23 September 2008 I think both the G37 and the 335Ci are awesome cars....my heart says the 335Ci, but with a significant price difference, and almost just as much drive quality, my mind says the G37. I think that Jap cars have gone a long way in improve ride quality and finishing of car interiors, but I still think they do not quite fit in the german car category Reply |

08 October 2008 I currently drive an E500 saloon and I would have to say that there is nothing like the feel of a Mercedes or a BMW on the road. But if you compare price then the Germans are over charging us bigtime. As a business manager its very hard for me to justify the maintenance costs for my Merc but the feel of driving it is 2nd to none so for now I'm coping. However I am seriously thinking of heading towards an Infinti in the future, having been a bigtime Nissan lover for a longtime, just because in todays market it gives too much for too little money. A lexus in comparision is overpriced and underpowered. Reply |
