'Stop buying sports cars'
20 August 2008
A Dubai police chief says parents need to stop buying their sons powerful sports cars and paying their traffic fines as these indulgences are encouraging 'nonchalant and dangerous' driving attitudes among young men, reported The National. In the first half of this year, 433 road accidents in the emirate, resulting in 65 deaths, were blamed on drivers aged from 18 to 28.
Colonel Said Muhair al Mazrouei, acting director of Dubai Police’s Traffic Department, was quoted as saying that ‘When young people see that their parents are prepared to buy them an expensive, fast car, pay for their unlimited fines and supply them with a generous allowance, then children fail to learn how to respect road laws.’
He singles out young affluent Emiratis as the worst offenders for speeding and other traffic offences in Dubai ‘The biggest group of traffic violators is between 20 and 25 years of age,’ he said. ‘They are usually high school and college students. Their reckless driving also puts other people’s lives at risk.’
In a bid to curb the number of accidents, 500 new speed cameras are to be installed on the most dangerous roads of Dubai. Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road and Emirates Road have been marked out as traffic blackspots. The National claims that all of the new cameras will be operational by the end of 2008 and will be checked regularly for evidence.
This latest crackdown follows on from the realignment of traffic offence fines and the black point system in March of this year.
Do you think the police chief is right in his claims? Who do you think are the worst drivers? And how do you feel about 500 speed cameras coming to Dubai's streets? Let us know in the comments box below.

Brendan Crisp says Re: ‘Stop buying sports cars’
22 August 2008 The police chiefs views need to flow down to his officers. I was given a ticket the other day for not moving out of the left hand lane quick enough to let a young Emirati speed past. Un-believable. Reply |
